The Taline's Tulip Small cross stitch folk embroidery kit shares the same origin as the large version--an heirloom folk embroidery shared with me by Taline Voskeritchian, who asked me to keep it alive. This version centers on a single central motif of crosses, tulips, and arrows, a design found in both Armenian and Greek folk embroideries in several variations, and is a more approachable version of this extraordinary design. The same sophisticated palette of coral, warm blue, green, old gold, garnet, alizarin, and turquoise, grounded by black outlining, and the same beautiful interplay of bold geometric elements, intricate backstitch, and graceful negative space. This version features a single central motif stitched on a smaller piece of linen.
What you'll make: A 15 x 19" table runner
What's in your kit:
- One 17 x 21" piece of 30ct European linen in Vanilla
- DMC 6-strand embroidery floss
- John James size 24 cross stitch needle
- Full color chart and instructions
Stitches used: Cross stitch, backstitch Skill level: Confident Beginner to Intermediate Stitch count: 6,992 cross stitches, 11,001 backstitches (194 x 254 stitch area)
Krista's note: for Taline's Tulips Small, Maria used 1 strand of DMC for all backstitches, but I have included enough floss for you to use 2 strands for all backstitches and you can see that effect in the photos of Taline's Tulps Large.
Please note: the drawn thread hem finishing shown in the photos has to be done after the design is stitched; the fabric in your kit will come with the raw edges serged so they don't unravel while you are stitching.

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.
What if I'm new to cross stitch?
One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.
So, you've been stitching a while now?
I can't wait to share traditional folk embroidery with you! The intricate designs, the unique color palettes, the wonderful texture of folk fabrics will provide you with stitching joy. I suggest browsing my Runners & Squares sections as they have the most intricate designs to appeal to an experienced stitcher and every design is available as a kit or a PDF pattern.
This is really an update to my earlier review. I went full 5 stars after the quick response from Krista, getting me the PDF version of the instructions so I could read the color code on the pattern. I've really enjoyed working on this project and am glad I now have the confidence that I'm doing it correctly. I'll be buying more patterns/kits AFTER I finish this one (need to work on completing one project at a time!)
Nice fabric and threads. I'm enjoying working on the project. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's almost impossible to read the thread color letter on the actual pattern. Most of the time it's not a problem because the color has only one option but when there's several shades it becomes more difficult.
Yes, this is an intricate pattern and the charts are on the smaller side. However, if you'd like the PDF so you can zoom in and see the symbols larger, you can email me at avleaembroidery@gmail.com and I'll send along the PDF. Thank you! Krista
Love the coloring. Would love more Armenian design.
