The Romanian Sampler cross stitch folk embroidery kit is a delightful collection of classic Romanian folk embroidery motifs--a star, a rose, a basket, and a floral crown--worked in traditional coral and black. Romanian folk embroidery has a bold, graphic freshness that is quite distinctive from the Greek tradition, and this little sampler captures that character beautifully. Each motif is a gem in its own right, and together they make a small square that works well as a sampler, or you can stitch the individual designs for smaller projects like ornaments, pincushions, or coasters.

What you'll make: A 10 x 10" table square (also suitable for finishing as ornaments, pincushions, or coasters)

  • DMC 6-strand embroidery floss
  • John James size 24 cross stitch needle
  • Full color chart and instructions

What does "beginner" mean for this kit?

You can start here with no cross stitch experience at all. This design uses simple stitches throughout, and the full color chart and instructions walk you through from the first stitch. I have specifically designed this kit with a beginner in mind. You can find additional support with my How To videos or at our Avlea Stitchers Facebook page.

Please note: the drawn thread hem finishing shown in the photos has to be done after the design is stitched; the fabric in your kit will come with the raw edges serged so they don't unravel while you are stitching.

Why is folk fabric so special?

Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.

What if I'm new to cross stitch?
