The Romanian Basket cross stitch folk embroidery kit is inspired by a motif found in a vintage Romanian embroidery booklet, using a single element of squares, diamonds, and delicate vinework repeated in varying combinations to create a design of surprising intricacy. Worked in a traditional two-tone red palette of garnet and coral on Porcelain linen, it has a rich, geometric quality that is very characteristic of Romanian folk embroidery.
The single-motif-in-variation format is a classic feature of folk embroidery and this basket cloth is a lovely example of how beautiful a single repeating element can be.

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.
What if I'm new to cross stitch?
One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.
So, you've been stitching a while now?
I can't wait to share traditional folk embroidery with you! The intricate designs, the unique color palettes, the wonderful texture of folk fabrics will provide you with stitching joy. I suggest browsing my Runners & Squares sections as they have the most intricate designs to appeal to an experienced stitcher and every design is available as a kit or a PDF pattern.
I hade lots of fun making this for a couple getting married at my church, and am making another one now!!! I've done a few other Avlea patterns, but this is by far my favorite!
This is a beautiful kit. The materials are good materials and beautiful fabric. I had hoped the fabric would have been a little more off-white/cream colored however, I think it is still a beautiful material. When complete it will be a wonderful Pascha basket cover for our family. I plan on purchasing more basket kits and patterns to cross-stitch in the future.
The edges of the Fabric i received did not resemble even closely the edges of the fabric depicted on the website. Luckily i have access to a sewing machine and can make the edges look a little, well, more finished.
All of my kits have the raw edges serged for your convenience so the fabric doesn't fray while you are stitching. The finishing that you see in the photos needs to be done after the embroidery has been stitched. Please visit the How To page for finishing options.
I haven't started working on it but the kit is excellent. Beautiful colored floss, material, and needle. Fast delivery.
