The Myriam's Garden cross stitch folk embroidery kit is inspired by an embroidered cushion cover made in the Cyclades Islands in the 1700s, filled with strong geometric vines and delicate butter yellow flowers in a colorway that is genuinely unusual in the folk embroidery tradition. Yellow and green typically appear as accent colors in historic Greek embroidery, so a design built entirely around them has a freshness and originality that sets it apart. Worked on ivory linen, the soft palette has a quiet luminosity that is very beautiful. This was the very first prika embroidery I made for my first grandchild and it holds a special place in my heart as I remember stitching it while waiting to welcome her!
The Cyclades have one of the richest embroidery traditions in the Greek island world, and this 18th-century cushion cover is a lovely example of a stitcher doing something quietly unexpected.

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.
What if I'm new to cross stitch?
One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.
So, you've been stitching a while now?
I can't wait to share traditional folk embroidery with you! The intricate designs, the unique color palettes, the wonderful texture of folk fabrics will provide you with stitching joy. I suggest browsing my Runners & Squares sections as they have the most intricate designs to appeal to an experienced stitcher and every design is available as a kit or a PDF pattern.
This kit came quickly and was packed very nicely! I have just started but the pattern/instructions are very easy to follow. Very excited to finish this one, and I plan on adding wording to the center to commemorate a baptism!
I've had my eye on Myriam's Garden for a while now so I'm excited to start working on it! I think that the colors are as beautiful in person as they are on the website!
Thank you, Krista, for all the work you put in to make these lovely projects for us! I started stitching when I was a teacher. It was a nice quiet, calming activity after all the chaos of the kids. Now that I'm retired I still love seeing the colors and patterns on my fabric. We do Grammy Camp in the summers and this past year I taught the "grands" how to cross stitch. Hopefully some of them will continue to enjoy these crafts as they grow up.
Again, thank you!
