The Kyivan Stars cross stitch folk embroidery kit is inspired by a vintage Ukrainian table runner, featuring dense borders at each end connected by delicate rows of stitches and stylized floral motifs across the length of the runner. The palette has been updated from the high-contrast original into softened shades of butter yellow, deep grey, warm blue, terra cotta, and soft green that feel softly modern while staying true to the spirit of the design. It's a beautiful and distinctive piece that doesn't look quite like anything else in folk embroidery. The original textile that inspired this design is an embroidery in my personal collection that has very bright "disco" colors which date it to the 1970s.
Ukrainian folk embroidery has a rich and distinctive tradition within traditional embroidery, and this table runner is a wonderful example of the kind of dense borders with multiple motifs that are often seen in vintage embroideries from Ukraine.

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.

This is my 2nd time doing the Kyivan Stars.
My husband and I are going to Florida next winter with friends who are moving there, so this will be our Thank you gift! I really enjoyed doing it the first time, Can’t wait to start it!
Beautiful design!
The kit was packed well and has everything needed for completion. I apprciate the videos on your website. However, the actual colors of the floss were a bit subdued. I expected them to be brighter, like the pictures on the website. Other than that, I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to working on it!
Beautiful colors! Love the design and the cloth is of good quality. I’m enjoying working on it.
Love this pattern.
