The Byzantine Scroll and Meander Blue cross stitch folk embroidery kit features three lavish borders drawn from the decorative vocabulary of Byzantine art. Worked in just two colors, the outlining of the lighter shade creates a surprising amount of intricacy and contrast and is a striking example of how much a limited palette can achieve. I stitched this for my daughter as a wedding gift and it always makes me happy to see it at her house!
The scroll and meander are among the oldest continuous motifs in Mediterranean decorative art, moving from ancient Greek friezes into Byzantine ecclesiastical work and from there into the folk embroidery tradition. Stitching them today is like a small act of connection across a very long history of textiles!

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.

One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.

I’ve just started working on this. I’m slow and will take me quite a while to do, but I was looking for a bigger project. I’ve been doing the hoop kits and was ready for something more. Very easy instructions and I’m enjoying it!
I am in love with this kit. In fact I have ordered and just received my second kit! These are beautiful heirloom quality items. Something to pass on to friends and family.
