The Little Leaves BitKit cross stitch folk embroidery kit is a delightful introduction to folk embroidery. I like to think of these kits as a "little bit of stitching" that introduces you to the folk embroidery tradition without a big time commitment. A delicate border of interlocking leaves, a motif common to the folk embroidery of many lands, is worked in a warm palette of terra cotta, gold, green, and soft blue on ivory Mikini fabric. It stitches up quickly and the result is a charming little table runner full of folk embroidery character. This design went viral on Instagram and has over 500,000 views!
What you'll make: An 8 x 10" mini table runner
What's in your kit:
- One piece of 30ct 100% cotton Mikini in ivory
- DMC 6-strand embroidery floss
- John James size 24 cross stitch needle
- Full color chart and instructions
Stitches used: Cross stitch Skill level: Beginner Stitch count: 2,770 cross stitches (73 x 113 stitch area)
Please note: the drawn thread hem finishing shown in the photos has to be done after the design is stitched; the fabric in your kit will come with the raw edges serged so they don't unravel while you are stitching.

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.
What if I'm new to cross stitch?
One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.
So, you've been stitching a while now?
I can't wait to share traditional folk embroidery with you! The intricate designs, the unique color palettes, the wonderful texture of folk fabrics will provide you with stitching joy. I suggest browsing my Runners & Squares sections as they have the most intricate designs to appeal to an experienced stitcher and every design is available as a kit or a PDF pattern.
Love the quality and design. Just one issue - 2 of the floss colors were very very similar. This made it difficult to make sure I was using the correct color and did not do the design justice. One of the colors should have been more brown than green as they both looked like dark green.
The 936 avocado green very dk and 3787 brown grey very dark are close in color and if I have trouble telling them apart, I take them outside in daylight. I created this color palette for the Pacific NW Stitch Summit and was working with a palette that we developed for the event so I wanted to make sure I used all the colors which is why there are both colors in the design.
I am enjoying the project. The material is amazing. I tried to save money on the kits by buying my own fabric. Nothing matches the quality of the fabric in the kits.
This was an easy piece to do. Enjoyed working on it and it is finished stitching and waiting for the class.
I love this kit! The colors are lovely, the pattern is pretty easy to follow, and the video guides have been really helpful. After just a week I am almost done!
Love this pattern. Hope to make several as gifts. Thank you!
