Looking to combine your love of folk embroidery and sewing? I am partnering with Folkwear Sewing Patterns to offer this historically-inspired Romanian Blouse pattern, available as a paper pattern or PDF. If you are ordering multiple items, please note that Folkwear patterns will ship separately direct from Folkwear. One size (up to 40" (102cm) bust).
This sewing pattern creates a stunningly beautiful shirt when fully embroidered, and a simple peasant blouse if you choose forego the embellishments. Add your own character to this classic European blouse with traditional handwork techniques or modern embellishments.
The graceful shape of this simply cut peasant blouse can be accentuated by your choice of fabric for a simple contemporary look, although it is traditionally characterized by the variety and beauty of its handwork. We offer both versions.
Our Romanian Blouse has a gathered neckline, underarm gussets, and sleeves that can be worn three-quarter or full length, with options for a self-formed deep ruffled cuff, a cuff that gathers at the wrist, or hanging loose sleeve. Our "one size" pattern will fit busts up to 40" (102cm).
Optional designs and instructions are included for the detailed embroidery (sleeves and front of blouse), smocking at neck and wrists, crocheted edges for neckline and wrists, handmade drawstring cord, and for sewing the entire blouse by hand using insertion stitch and decorative hem-stitching. Any or all of these techniques can be made with casings for drawstrings and purchased braid.
Suggested fabrics: Lightweight, soft fabrics such as fine cotton or linen, silk crepe, muslin, cotton gauze.
Sizing and Yardage chart (.pdf) - finished chest measurement is approximately 50" (127cm), finished width at hem is 47" (119cm).
This pattern is available as a Paper pattern and PDF pattern. Choose the
pattern format you want in the drop down menu. The PDF pattern has instructions and files for copy shop (36” and A0), print at home (A4 and 8.5”x11”)

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.

Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.
What if I'm new to cross stitch?
One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.

So, you've been stitching a while now?
I can't wait to share traditional folk embroidery with you! The intricate designs, the unique color palettes, the wonderful texture of folk fabrics will provide you with stitching joy. I suggest browsing my Runners & Squares sections as they have the most intricate designs to appeal to an experienced stitcher and every design is available as a kit or a PDF pattern.
