The Blue Indigo cross stitch folk embroidery PDF pattern is inspired by a remarkable piece of history: small embroidered bags made in Greece in the 1920s to raise relief funds following the Lausanne population exchange of 1923. The design features a stylized indigo floral spray, a plant prized for its rich blue dyes across the Mediterranean for millennia, and is lined with coordinating Liberty Tana Lawn® to create a bag that is as beautiful to enjoy as it is to stitch.
What you'll make: An 8 x 10.5" lined bag
Stitches used: Cross stitch, backstitch Skill level: Confident Beginner (beginner level sewing by hand or machine) Stitch count: 2,751 cross stitches, 100 backstitches (79 x 70 stitch area)

Historically-inspired, modern-made!
Avlea Folk Embroidery brings ancient beauty to the modern world with beautiful folk embroidery kits of the finest quality. I design and make each kit by hand in my Central Oregon studio, to give you a wonderful stitching experience no matter your skill level.
Why is folk fabric so special?
Folk fabrics have been used for hundreds of years to make folk costumes and household embroideries. When you work a cross stitch design on them, they give your stitching a beautiful texture and are a delight to stitch on, plus they're made to stand up to daily use. I source mine from a 3rd-generation family mill in Athens, Greece so you can have an authentic stitching experience.
What if I'm new to cross stitch?
One of the wonderful things about cross stitch folk embroidery is that you can learn how to do it in a couple of hours and enjoy it for a lifetime! If you're new, watch my How To Cross Stitch video to get started on your folk embroidery journey.
So, you've been stitching a while now?
I can't wait to share traditional folk embroidery with you! The intricate designs, the unique color palettes, the wonderful texture of folk fabrics will provide you with stitching joy. I suggest browsing my Runners & Squares sections as they have the most intricate designs to appeal to an experienced stitcher and every design is available as a kit or a PDF pattern.
Hello Krista,
I bought the Blue Indigo bag cross stitch pattern in PDF format. I would have preferred to buy the complete kit with your linen and the beautiful Liberty fabric, but the exchange rate and shipping costs are too high for me.
Merci

Bello e piacevole da ricamare.
Blue is my favourite colour so couldn’t pass up not having this lovely design to stitch. So many lovely designs to choose from.
I've not had time to even look at starting this pattern yet! However, as I have bought quite a few pdf files from Avlea which I have embroidered, I have complete confidence that this one will be up to the usual excellent standard.
